Where lorem ipsum comes from
Lorem ipsum is garbled Latin. The source is a genuine passage from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil, c. 45 BC), which printers scrambled into non-sentences — real words, no meaning. Because the source is two millennia old, the filler is public domain and safe for any commercial mockup.
Why use nonsense at all? Because meaningful text hijacks attention. When a design review contains readable copy, stakeholders review the copy — the wording, the claims, the typos — instead of the layout. Placeholder text that looks like language but reads as nothing keeps a layout review about layout. When the real content arrives, you swap it in and hold the content review separately.
Worked example
Set the unit to Words, the count to 12, and leave the classic start on. The output is exactly “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit sed do eiusmod tempor.” — the first 12 words of the traditional opening, capitalized and period-terminated. In Paragraphs mode with count 3, you get three blocks of 4–8 sentences, each sentence 6–14 random words from the classic corpus, and the first paragraph opens with the famous line.

Does lorem ipsum actually mean anything?
Mostly not. It descends from Cicero's 'De finibus bonorum et malorum', but typesetters chopped and rearranged the words until the passage stopped parsing as Latin. Individual words are real ('dolor' means pain, 'labore' means work), but the sentences are deliberate nonsense.
Why not just use real text in a mockup?
Because people read real text. Put a draft headline in a layout review and the meeting becomes an argument about the headline instead of the spacing, hierarchy, and typography you needed feedback on. Nonsense filler keeps everyone's eyes on the design.
How many paragraphs should I generate for a mockup?
Match the real content's expected shape: 1–2 paragraphs for a card or hero section, 3–5 for an article body, 8+ only when you're testing long-page behavior like sticky sidebars or infinite scroll. Testing with both a short and a long fill catches layout breakage early.
